Giuliana Rancic- The Zendaya Joke Was Not A Racist One

Fashion Police correspondent Giuliana Rancic took major heat in late February when she made a joke about singer/actress Zendaya. On an episode of Fashion Police, Rancic made the controversial comment that Zendaya’s dreadlocks likely smelled of “patchouli” or “like weed.” While she didn’t end up getting the axe for the comment, she did take a fair share of heat for it. It should be noted she ended up apologizing (which Zendaya also responded to), but now is speaking to People for the first time openly about the incident.

Rancic explained how she felt when Zendaya said she was using racial slurs, stating, “I read her statement and I was shocked. I made [the joke] as a reference to the hippie culture. It was a bohemian-chic reference, not about race, nor would it ever be. It was horrifying to have my name in a headline with words I have never been associated with in my life.”

“On set, I made peace signs and I said boho twice…If I thought this joke could be interpreted another way, I never would have done it,” Rancic explained, adding that, “I felt horrible.”

Rancic had more to add still, dishing to People that, “There were about 50 sets of eyeballs on set that day. And not one person thought that it had the undertones that it ended up having once it aired because they heard it in context.”

She wrapped with revealing that people even sent her death threats over the Zendaya incident, specifically stating that, “People were sending me pictures of the barrel of a gun saying, ‘I’m going to kill your family.’ It was awful.”
