Charity is a new R&B artist who is based out of Detroit, Michigan. She has recently released a 4 song EP entitled “Yellow.” So, is the project worth a listen?
Charity Yellow EP Review
The EP opens with the track “Pretty.” Immediately from the beginning, it is showcased that Charity has a gorgeous voice. I immediately was reminded of Brandy, but with more of a soulful/rocky/funky vibe. The song has an upbeat feel to it that immediately puts the listener in a good mood.
“Inspired,” which is the next track, slows things down a bit pace-wise, as it has a jazzy/soulful feel to it. This song definitely had an Erykah Badu-esque vibe to it, but in our humble opinion, Charity has more of a pure voice than Badu has, which makes the music more pleasant to listen to. I also enjoyed the lyrics, especially when Charity sang, “There’s something very genius about your mind that makes me want to open it climb inside, and while I am exploring I wonder what I’ll find”
The next track is the single from the EP, “Beautiful Moments.” It is clear why this was chosen as a single, as it is catchy and has pop-rock appeal. While Charity’s voice definitely shines here, I particularly loved the lyrics to the chorus, especially where Charity sings, “You’ve got beautiful moments deep in your eyes, lay on the grass in the summer and catch butterflies, You’ve got beautiful moments in the palm of your hands, baptize me in your water, teach me to dance.” In a world where so many songs sound like oversexed copies of one another, it was great to hear a single that was original, upbeat, and just a feel good song.
The EP closes with the piano-driven “Undescribable.” While I enjoyed the faster pace of “Beautiful Moments” more, I did like that with the slower pace of this song, you were fully able to appreciate what a gorgeous voice Charity has.
It should be noted that Detroit is definitely a rough neighborhood to grow up in, as it has previously been named America’s most dangerous city. It’s nice to hear an artist like Charity, who comes from such a rough place, but is able to still see the beauty in life around her.
If you are a fan of feel good music, R&B, or any of the aforementioned artists she reminds me of, I would highly recommend checking out Charity’s new EP. You will not be disappointed.
