Kinky Boots Broadway Review

Kinky Boots Is Better Than Ever As Original Cast Members Return

They’re Back!

When I heard that the two principal original cast members of Broadway’s Tony Award winning musical Kinky Boots were returning- namely leads Billy Porter and Stark Sands– I knew I had to return to the show again. I was curious to see them reprise the same roles they had perfected back in 2013 and excited for a nostalgic trip back in time. After seeing the show with them again, I can safely say that the show is truly better than ever with them back in it.

As soon as Stark Sands entered onto the stage in the musical’s first number, The Most Beautiful Thing In The World, I immediately noticed that his voice had not changed at all and that he sounded just as good as he did when the show premiered. I also was impressed that he had not really aged since the show’s premiere almost 5 years ago, and was able to step back into the role with ease.

While Sands was a Tony nominee for the show, it was Porter who took home the Tony Award from the show that year- and deservingly so. When Porter came onstage in his first number as Lola, he was immediately met with rapturous applause from the audience. Like Sands, he flawlessly stepped back into the role of Lola, looking and sounding better than ever.

While many theater fans (myself included prior to re-visiting the show) already know the plot of Kinky Boots, I had a few different takeaways this time while seeing it. These included the following:

  • It is one of the most important pieces of musical theater for the LGBTQ community, which unfortunately sometimes gets overlooked when mentioning shows such as Rent. I have found that every time I have seen the show, my eyes well with tears by the end of it, as I am so inspired by the message it presents regarding celebrating your individual self/having pride in yourself.
  • Leads returning to shows can sometimes be nostalgic, but years can change how well they fit into the roles. As aforementioned, Sands and Porter stepped back into their roles with ease, and (although some cast members are different), this is the closest thing you will see to seeing the show back with its “original cast.”
  • Having two actors back who know the material so well- and aided in its initial creation- truly makes the show, currently, better than it’s ever been. These are actors who not only performed the material years ago, but proved with stepping back into the roles they have completely mastered it.

If you have not seen Kinky Boots yet, I’d highly recommend you run to buy tickets with Porter and Sands in the roles, as they are only in it for a limited time. And, if you’re like me, and have already seen the show, I’d still highly recommend a revisit. You won’t be disappointed.
